Instagram Unveils “Edits” – A New Video Editing App to Compete with CapCut
Instagram has officially launched Edits, a powerful new video editing app designed to go head-to-head with CapCut, the popular tool linked to TikTok. First introduced in January, Edits is now available for free on both iOS and Android platforms.
Billed as a “video creation app designed for creators,” Edits offers a suite of advanced features including project management tools, idea tracking, performance analytics, and high-end editing capabilities. Users can explore tools like AI-generated animations from still images, green screen replacements, and automatic subject cutouts—features not available in the standard Instagram app.
With functionality closely mirroring CapCut, which is developed by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, Edits appears to be Meta’s strategic move to compete directly in the short-form video space. The timing of its announcement, which coincided with the brief removal of TikTok and CapCut from U.S. app stores, only reinforces that perspective.
